This cross tells the story of Juan Diego and his meeting with the Marian apparition Guadalupe in Mexico. In this meeting, Mary instructed Juan Diego to go to the bishop of Mexico and request that a church be built to raise awareness of Mary's love and compassion for the people.

Juan was told to gather roses into his cloak and deliver them to the bishop. When Juan opened his cloak for the Bishop, the roses fell to the floor and inside his tilma, there was a full sized image of Mary imprinted inside.
